Air Travel

Air Travel

Air Travel is particularly climate-relevant. On the one hand, large distances can be travelled by plane in a short time. On the other hand, the climate impact of air travel results not only from the CO2 emissions from burning paraffin, but also from so-called non-CO2 effects (contrails, nitrogen oxides, etc.).

To calculate the total climate impact of a flight, the CO2 emissions are therefore multiplied by a factor of 3. However, as the flight altitudes that are particularly critical for non-CO2 effects are only reached after a certain flight distance, the Carbon Calculator only takes the factor into account from flight kilometre 401.

You can find more information on the climate impact of air travel here: https://www.umweltbundesamt.de/publikationen/klimawirkung-des-luftverkehrs.
