Step 7 from 8

My other consumer behaviour

Greenhouse gas emissions from other consumption are difficult to calculate: firstly because of the wide variety of goods and services, and secondly because not all emissions can be clearly allocated to individual areas of consumption (residual emissions). The CO2 Calculator therefore estimates your Miscellaneous Consumption emissions in a first step based on your income. If you have more money available, you generally spend more of it.

In individual cases, however, large deviations from this "rule" are possible: e.g. if high expenditure is channelled into further training or particularly climate-friendly products, or if a lot of money is invested or given away (support for family members, donations). You can therefore "overwrite" the first estimate of income step by step with more precise information.

This normally corresponds to the monthly salary or pension payment in your account. In addition, there may be other income such as child benefit, special payments (e.g. 13th monthly salary) or capital and rental income.

The income serves as an initial estimate of your consumer spending. If you regularly spend larger amounts (e.g. invest or donate), you can deduct them from your income.

If you live in a family or cohabitation, calculate the sum of the net incomes of all members.

These can be: "green" call money accounts, savings bonds with a climate and environmental focus, investments in renewable energy projects such as wind or solar parks, shares in energy cooperatives, sustainability funds, etc.

They thus enable "Carbon Handprints for others". Due to the wide variety of projects, only a rough estimate of the emissions saved is possible here.

tonnes of CO2e

Include donations ("climate contributions") for climate protection projects that reduce a precisely defined, certified amount of CO2.

In this way, you enable "Carbon handprints for others" and this is shown accordingly in your handprint.

Leisure and culture

Leisure and culture

The organisation of our leisure time can look very different. Some hobbies require more material, others require special facilities such as swimming pools, climbing gyms or theatres. The construction and maintenance of these facilities cause emissions.

The more expensive a leisure activity is, the more climate impact it usually has. Please note that the emissions for travelling and trips, clothing and overnight stays have already been recorded elsewhere in the calculator and therefore do not need to be taken into account here.

Streaming

The use of the internet is associated with emissions in data centres and transmission network operators, particularly for data-rich applications such as films or video games. The level of emissions depends on the amount of data and the transmission path. Transmission via mobile communications causes far more emissions than data transmission via a fixed network and connected WLAN. The power consumption for the devices you use is already taken into account by querying your household power consumption in the calculator.

Pets

Pets

Greenhouse gas emissions from pet ownership depend in particular on the type and amount of Food and thus the weight of the animal. We also take into account flat-rate expenses for accessories, animal health and care in the calculation.

Other (pre-)products & services

The CO2 emissions from the production of raw materials (e.g. glass or ceramics) and intermediate products (e.g. plastic granulate) are taken into account here. Emissions from smaller product categories such as jewellery and personal care are also included.

The amount of your emissions is estimated based on your income and consumption behaviour. Unfortunately, a more precise allocation is not possible due to the large number of products and services to be taken into account and technical data difficulties.

"Collective consumption backpack"

"Collective consumption backpack"

The CO2 emissions for the construction of factories, office buildings, machinery and technical equipment are recorded here. These are used over many years and cannot be clearly assigned to individual product categories in terms of data. The demand for these so-called "plant investments" increases with rising consumption levels. The calculator therefore shows the CO2 emissions of the "collective consumption backpack" according to your income and purchasing behaviour.

Changes according to your consumption emissions compared to the average.
